New York: 5 Foolproof Eateries

11/1/2014

New York and I weren't lovers at first sight. In fact, my first couple of visits there I hated it. But time, smart decisions and Williamsburg did a magical trick and now I can certainly say we're at the hands-holding phase. With New York's food, on the other hand, I cuddle since day one. On my last visit there I listed a few places I keep returning to – they don't disappoint  and always leave me craving for more, until the next visit.

1. Zizi Limona

I discovered Zizi when writing an article about Israeli-owned New York restaurants.  I took a friend, and none of us could believe we're not in a chic Tel Avivian spot. Nir Mesika, the chef, is not only a sweetheart, he's also a genius when it comes to yogurt, eggplant, smoked flavors and seafood. His menu is light and full of flavors - it's an instant addiction.

2. Chobani SOHO

If someone told me I'l be recommending a place with a commercial, mass-production affiliation, I'd laugh. But here I was, sitting in Chobani's cute coffee shop, eating a crunchy 'simit' (Turkish bread) with spicy labaneh cheese and sweet fruit preserves, smiling ear to ear. Despite the fact Chobani is a huge yogurt brand, the place manages to be intimate and creative - and the Turkish twist is a game-changer.

3. Ippudo Ramen

You're doomed, said the friend who took me here for my first ramen ever, two years ago. You'll never find a better ramen. Trust me, I tried, I tried hard, but nothing could compete with this legendary place's broth, noodles and flavors. The ramen (go to the West Village branch and order the one in the red bowl - it's a bestseller for a reason) is well worth the wait, and while you mingle with strangers in the lounge, try the most expensive cucumber appetizer you'll ever meet - 8$ for nibbles from heaven.

4. The Lobster Place at Chelsea Market

The Highline alone properly changed my attitude towards New York - walking it gave my big apple experience a personal, cozy dimension. I already have a 'ritual' - walk the Highline, look at the window above the highway, come down to Anthropology, to touch some expensive clothes, eat something at Chelsea Market. My favorite place in this delicious maze is the Lobster Place - fragrant bisque and the freshest sushi in the city.

5. Five Leaves

Bravery and irresponsibility allowed me to add a newcomer to this list - Five Leaves is a relatively new spot overlooking McCarren Park, and the line indicates the hype. Inside, you'll find a bistro decor, a bust atmosphere, and beautiful (so much, it interferes with their job) waiters. The food is comfort classics with a twist - the fried oysters should be ordered twice, the hamburger mustn't be shared - it's just too good.

Know of a better ramen? Don't believe in yogurt for lunch? Tell me about your favorite NYC places in the comments.
